What’s Your Single Sentence Pitch?

July 17, 2011

Last weekend I sent out an email to the mailing list with the above video featuring Adeo Ressi’s Mad Libs technique for creating a strong single sentence pitch. As you can see in the video above, the formula Adeo has created is:

My company, (company name), is developing (1. define offering) to help (2. specific target audience) (3. solve a problem) (4. with secret sauce).

The Challenge

I requested your single sentence pitches, with the best pitch to be selected and sent out on the mailing list this weekend.

The Winner

My company, Radar Music Videos is developing off-the-shelf services to help independent record labels and unsigned artists to commission and promote music videos, with exclusive access to directors and video channels worldwide.

From Caroline Bottomley at http://www.radarmusicvideos.com/

I choose this pitch because it contained all four key elements Adeo raised in his video, including a very specific target audience, and the secret sauce, which was missing from most entries.

  1. Define offering: “off-the shelf services”
  2. Specific target audience: “independent record labels and unsigned artists”
  3. Solve a problem: “to commission and promote music videos”
  4. With secret sauce: “with exclusive access to directors…”

The Other Pitches

iCanPilot makes project software that helps product developers and marketers get results like top performers on their most important activities and have time for a life by transforming the practices of top experts into a self guided software format. -Mary Poul

Delivering babies at a really nice maternity clinic in Nairobi, Kenya. -Nick Sowden (Jacaranda Health)

My company, MPlab is developing a web app to help people all over the world remember, track and get back their lent and borrowed things with automated notifications for FREE! -Maciej Dziurla

To inspire & teach one million risk-takers to start and/or grow their brand & change the economic landscape of America. We do this by sharing the tools big corporations use & helping create strong strategies. -Barry McCann (7 Secrets LLC)

And finally, here is my own attempt at a single sentence pitch for the Startup Daily.

My company, the Startup Daily, delivers a daily email that helps entrepreneurs find and purchase the most relevant business books by offering a taste of a different book each day through a short tip, idea, or insight.

Thanks for highlighting Introvio’s pitch among your other examples, Karl. The single sentence pitch was something I’d been working on before, but your email prompted me to get it out into the wild. Having that video from Adeo was a big help in getting me to focus on the critical elements; seems it helped several others too.

Also, nice work on the Startup Daily pitch. You nailed it!

Thanks for including my pitch, Karl. Can definitely see now where I need to add in the secret sauce.

Also, thank you for The Startup Daily. I look forward to it each day (thanks to the time zone difference, I usually read it towards the end of my workday).

Thanks again to all of you that submitted pitches (and those that tried and didn’t submit). I was helping out on another one this week and again I’m amazed at how much it helps make sure the focus is in the right place.
