August 9, 2011Volume #158

You may not be able to afford to hire the most talented and polished workers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have the great employees.

When hiring, look for evidence of the candidate’s character, not their skills. A strong work ethic, perseverance, and the ability to think like an owner cannot be learned, but almost everything else can be.

Hire for Attitude, Train Aptitude

Invest the resources you would have spent on high salaries creating training systems that allow your people to grow with your organization. Most companies seriously underestimate what their people would be capable of if their leaders invested in them.

In The Breakthrough Company: How Everyday Companies Become Extraordinary Performers, Keith R. McFarland identifies the characteristics that keep some small companies small and allow others to achieve rocket-like growth. After examining of thousands of companies and interviewing more than 1,500 executives, surprising patterns emerged and some common myths are dispelled. The advice and observations in this book applies to the smallest startups and the largest corporations, with specific insights for each step in an organizations growth.
